Running news during the festival

Surplus energy!

CO2PENHAGEN produced a surplus of energy in all respects. The sustainable energy flowed and the good vibes pulsated all weekend.

CO2PENHAGEN produced a surplus of energy in all respects. The sustainable energy flowed and the good vibes pulsated all weekend. When the festival closed down Sunday night after a blast of electronica the festival Stirling engine had produced a surplus of 1 MWh of sustainable energy.

So is it possible to run a whole festival on CO2-neutral, sustainable energy? No doubt!
More than 40 bands and DJ’s played to the max on the three festival stages all weekend, films were screened in the Lounge tent, progressive Danish musician Lars H.U.G. lit up his avantgarde multi media art show and there was plenty of cold drinks and warm food – all on sustainable energy.

After the last LED-light had been turned off and the last music had faded out the festival had still produced 1 MWh more energy thatn had been actually used. A lot of the festival’s experiments to save energy  – ie. the energy saving LED-lamps using 50% less energy than normal lamps and the absorption cooling for the drinks – had payed off.

Also the audience and the artists showed a surplus of energy! Mercury Rev’s unique concert resulted in a 5 star review in the renowned danish music magazine GAFFA and Grand Avenue, Dúné, Szhirley, TV-2 and many more delivered outstanding performances that will stay with the audience for a long time to come.

Five star Mercury Rev!

‘Fantastic’, ‘deeply impressive’, ‘dazzling’ and ‘insanely funky’ are just some of the superlatives when Music magazine GAFFA reviews Mercury Rev’s appearance Saturday at CO2PENHAGEN.

‘Fantastic’, ‘deeply impressive’, ‘dazzling’ and ‘insanely funky’ are just some of the superlatives when Music magazine GAFFA reviews Mercury Rev’s appearance Saturday at CO2PENHAGEN. See how to ensure tickets to the concert Sunday!

It is praise all over from GAFFA music critic Nynne Hein Moller, in her review of The Mercury Rev Clear Light Ensamble’s unique appearance on CO2PENHAGEN Saturday evening:

"The music is constantly evolving, ending in an utterly fascinating culmination with the last of the 10-12 short movie parts: ‘Escape’. A man runs as fast as he can through both urban and natural landscapes, and the band musically illustrates the intensity of the pictures in a completely spellbinding show. A stunning conclusion in which all energy peaks, leaving the specators deeply impressed," writes GAFFA and continues:

"The co-work between Mercury Rev and The Danish Film Institute is a succes. Sunday, another Mercury Rev Clear Light Ensamble musical experience is bound to be interesting, with the band performing a whole new set, this time to Danish silent films."

The concerts takes place in the Lounge Scene and have a limited audience space. If you want to experience The Mercury Rev Clear Light Ensamble you can collect a special entry ticket in the Info Stand at the festival site. There is only one ticket per person, and the first-served principle applies.

From London to Copenhagen on bike

From Tower Bridge to DTU Lyngby. There are much pedaling going on when a small group of cyclists are fighting their way all the way from London to CO2PENHAGEN.

When CO2PENHAGEN kicks off 5th-6th September, a small delegation of cyclists on a very special mission will join the fun all the way from London.

BBC journalist Emma Thomas and Rebecca Meyer has taken the lead on the 10-(wo)man strong cycling group.

"We thought it would be hypocritical to buy a cheap air ticket to come to CO2PENHAGEN. So we took the bike to show that one can travel in a CO2-neutral way. We were inspired by the Danish cycling culture," says Emma Thomas directly from her bike saddle.

With them, the group carry a very special gift from London Direcor of Transport and ‘bicycle czar’, Kulveer Ranger, to Copenhagen engineering and environmental mayor Klaus Bondam: A bicycle bell, with a personal greeting from one bicycling enthusiast to another.

"Copenhagen is a renowned cycling city, and in London we take inspiration from its successes as we begin to create a true cycling revolution in our city,” says Kulveer Ranger.

According to Ranger, a record amount of money will this year be invested in cycling in the English capital. Among other things, London has launched it’s first Cycle Hire scheme and has started the construction of twelve ‘Cycle Superhighway’ to ensure quick and safe bicycle transportation in Central London.

"I would like wish Cycle Co2penhagen a fantastic ride. I’m sure that their message of environmental travel, and support for charity, will resonate with people on both sides of the north sea."

The trip from London to Copenhagen started Monday morning. The 300 miles/485 km takes 4 days to bicycle. Saturday morning the group will meet with a large parade of Danish cyclists on Kgs Nytorv, which Klaus Bondam will lead to CO2PENHAGEN at DTU in Lyngby.

If you want to experience the big bicycle parade Saturday morning, see more here.

Besides being one of Denmarks most famous pregeressive musicians Lars H.U.G is also a very productive painter.
Since 2001 he has dedicated himself more and more to painting.

When he goes on stage at CO2PENHAGEN the two art forms merges to create a beautiful show.
While Lars H.U.G sings the songs we know so well, his paintings will be projected on to the giant screens and the energy saving LED light will create just the right atmosphere.

The 22nd Century strikes CO2PENHAGEN when some of the most sought-after names from the experimental music scene of Los Angeles plays a series of transmitted concerts live from L.A.

The idea from Return of Investment is simple: stop flying the artists around, when you can use the internet for live broadcasts. The social web is here to stay - we just need to learn to use it to it’s full potential!

On Sunday, Daedelus, Take og Teeeb will play three live transmitted concerts directly from the DubLab studios in Los Angeles.

DubLab is a non-profit internetradio collective, that promotes positive music, art and culture. The first broadcast was transmitted in 1999 and since then DubLab has existed without commercial interests. In addition to the internet radio DubLab has also organized artshows, released records, movie projects and events.

Daedelus, Take og Teebs plays live from L.A. Sunday.

In a basement at DTU stands a two tonnes bright green engine. In September it will provide power to CO2PENHAGEN. In the future it will provide schools, hospitals, villages, and island communities with cheap, carbon-neutral energy.

‘Every major building with heating needs is a potential customer,’ says Lars Jagd, CEO of the company Stirling DK who has made the engine. ‘We make clients independent of fossil fuels and enable them to be self-sufficient’.

The Stirling engine is powered by wood chips, which come from the area around the DTU and which would otherwise have been thrown out: quite ordinary garden waste. The incineration does not happen in the engine itself, like in a normal engine, but outside in the fuel chamber. This means that the energy in biofuels can be used.

With the Stirling engine, the flexibilty is bigger than with a normal engine. All forms of biomass, including organic waste, can be used in the engine. Using almost any local, organic source of energy, it is possible to produce energy for an entire building or even a small community.

The Biofuel that keeps the Stirling motor running is carbon neutral because the fuel comes from what Lars Jagd calls ‘natural growth’:

‘When you burn a branch of wood it will emit CO2. But the new branch which grows out will suck a similar quantity of CO2 to itself. In this way, the technology is CO2 neutral’.

When trees and plants grow, they absorb CO2. CO2 molecules are again released when wood is burned. It is part of a natural balance. If you can use energy from biofuels such as wood, straw or coconut shells, it is actually possible to generate power without adding more greenhouse gases.

According to the EU biomass will one day be able to cover half of Europe’s energy consumption. Lars Jagd believes that biomass is the most effective renewable energy source:

‘Unfortunately, there has been too little focus on biofuels. But now that is changing. Biomass has great potential.’

So, you say you want a green world? Well, how excactly are you going to reach that goal? Try your luck as a ‘green dictator’ with Changing the Game – a game about the future of our planet, played with LEGO.

‘Changing the Game’ is a game where the participants work towards a clean, prosperous and secure energy future for our planet. During the game the players will design their dream scenarios for a sustainable future. Wind power? Solar energy? Or perhaps second generation bioethanol? The choice is yours.

But, having figured out how you would like your brave new, green world, now it’s up to you to make it come true: You cannot violate the laws of physics. And how do you plan to get your wishes to come true – within the rules of democracy?

‘Changing the Game’ will be played several times during CO2PENHAGEN at the Explore Zone. If you would like to participate in a game please email: kcapion@gmail.com
